    Altered
    Altered by Kelly Cain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m not normally a NA reader, mostly because I keep forgetting the characters are in their early 20s and do things that annoy me. But I’ve been working on expanding my horizons and when Kelly offered me an advanced copy of the book, I wanted to give it read.

Liv is an interesting character, but like most of the books I read, it’s the romantic male lead that I’m drawn to. In most books, they’re handsome, in your face alpha males. Interestingly enough, Nicolas isn’t any of that, at least not initially. In fact, I don’t think anyone would cast him as a romantic lead. He’s bearded, scruffy, and prefers to keep to himself. He’s 18 years old in law school, making some of his classmates think he’s brilliant, but in a Rainman sort of way, so they brush him off as odd.

Of course, there’s so much more to him. And while Liv can be annoying (she’s only 23…I remind myself), she does see past his attempts to hide. At first becoming his friend, and then later, as happens in romance, after a little angst, his love.

The age difference was a little strange at first, but then I reminded myself, any kid who’s in law school at 18 is mature beyond his years and as the couple gets older, the difference is less of a big deal. When she’s 35, he’ll be 30, and that’s not so odd. The truth is, you forget the difference when it’s not brought up.

Over all I enjoyed the book and think anyone who enjoys NA will get a kick out of Liv, her friends, and of course Nicolas.

  • To Love, Honor and Kill: Valentine Book Five Sneak Peek

I had hoped to have book five in the Valentine Mysteries published by Valentine’s Day, but you know what they say about best laid plans. However, all is not lost. I have an excerpt from To Love, Honor and Kill, that I hope you’ll enjoy. This excerpt has NOT been professionally edited, so it’s a little rough. But I hope you’ll enjoy it all the same.

Tess finds herself in the middle between her best friends, journalist Kate Wells and Detective Daniel Showalter as they each seek information about a 15-year old closed murder case. Sparks fly between Kate and Daniel, but that’s not always good as Tess finds herself mediating conflict between the two more often than not. The more they learn about the case, the more they believe someone has gotten away with murder and is willing to kill again to avoid getting caught.

Read the excerpt from To Love, Honor and Kill: Valentine Book Five

If you haven’t ready any of Valentine stories, you can see the four previous books, available in print and Kindle at Amazon and print only at Barnes and Noble.

  • Review: Festive in Death

    Festive in Death
Festive in Death by J.D. Robb
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have read every In Death book and novella, and continue to enjoy them. With that said, some books are better than others. Now that Eve and Roarke have been married for a few years, much of the angst that spiced up the books is gone, which makes the books feel a little flat. With that said, I really enjoyed Festive in Death, not so much because of the mystery, which was pretty good, but because we got more of Eve in the real world.

Growing up the way she did, Eve struggles with social norms, which she calls “rules”, such as marriage rules or friendship rules. It was fun to see her better navigate present buying and hosting a party than she had in previous books, although it still caused her a lot of stress. She’d rather be dealing with a dead body than be dressed up and schmoozing.

She made a deal with Sommerset that required her to help in the pre-party preparations, which allowed us to see doing everyday home stuff…at least more every day for someone married to the ultra-rich Roarke.

I loved the present exchange between her and Roarke, again seeing them at home together, without murder necessarily being in the mix.

The murder was well done as well, better than in a few of the previous books. Often it’s easy to know and even Eve figures out the murderer early in the books, which really makes the books about how she proves it. But Festive in Death had a nice little twist, just when we were sure she had the right guy.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and love being able to stay with Eve, Roarke and the rest of the crew over so many years and books (nearly 40 books). However, I do think that Robb will need to pick up the angst in the next book(s) a little bit. Perhaps by bringing murder a little closer to her inner circle.
